BMW iX: OVERVIEW
The production 2022 iX, which is based on the Vision iNext concept that BMW unveiled back in the fall of 2018, is the company's first all-electric SUV, and it's incredibly intriguing. The iX provides a driving range of more than 300 miles on a single charge. Full-time all-wheel drive is provided by two electric motors, and the body panels are made of lightweight carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic.
The iX's cabin is extremely roomy and packed with cutting-edge technology, including a stylish curved digital instrument panel screen. It will have competition when it enters American dealerships from rivals like the Audi e-Tron, the Tesla Model X, and the future Rivian R1S.
What has changed for 2022?
BMW iX is a completely new all-electric model in the BMW lineup
BMW iX: Pricing
Starting at $83,200 is the price of the 2022 BMW iX xDrive50.
Which one to Purchase?
The M60 model won't be available until the 2023 model year, but we anticipate it to sell for a hefty premium over the xDrive50 variant. For the time being, we'll suggest the xDrive50, which includes nearly all of the luxury and convenience features that a vehicle of this kind should have.
BMW iX: Power and Performance
At launch, the iX will only be available in the xDrive50 configuration, which comes standard with all-wheel drive and is powered by two electric motors that together provide 516 horsepower. The iX reached 60 mph in our tests in under 4.0 seconds. The M60, a high-performance variant with a 610 hp maximum horsepower rating, will be added to the lineup the following year.
Rear-wheel steering and an adjustable air suspension are available options for the iX. We tested an xDrive50 model and found it to have plenty of power, remarkable energy efficiency, nimble handling, and a comfortable ride.
BMW iX: Range, Battery life, and Charging
The iX has a sizable 105.2 kWh battery pack that, according to the EPA, will enable a driving range of up to 324 miles per charge. The iX's range shocked us when we tested it on our 75 mph highway fuel economy test.
Normally, interstate travel drastically affects an EV's overall driving range, leaving only a small portion of the estimated range, yet the iX managed an astonishing 290 miles during our test. When connected to a 200-kW connection, the iX can recharge from 10% to 80% in just 35 minutes thanks to its standard DC rapid charging feature.
BMW and EVgo have teamed up to offer iX drivers a network of public charging stations, but the SUV can also charge through a Level 2 home charging station and on other well-known networks.
BMW iX: Interior and Comfort
The Bimmer SUV is comparable in size to the company's mid-size X5 and X6 crossovers, and both its interior capacity for passengers and cargo are comparable to those of those vehicles. The iX's interior features a variety of high-tech features, including a huge curved touchscreen instrument panel and a hexagonal-shaped steering wheel, and is both straightforward and contemporary.
As an extra, BMW offers a sizable panoramic sunroof with electrochromic shade, a unique feature seen on very few cars. The iX's stereo system has integrated speakers within the power front seats, which are also heated. Genuine leather and imitation leather upholstery options are available, but BMW also provides a textile seat fabric choice called Loft that makes use of microfiber material.
BMW iX: Connectivity
BMW is launching its next-generation infotainment system, dubbed iDrive 8, in the iX SUV and the i4 sedan. The software features a voice-activated assistant, customizable menus, and graphics. The iX's futuristic dashboard is made up of a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a sizable 14.9-inch multimedia display.
All models come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and BMW additionally provides a Wi-Fi hotspot with a 5G cellular connection. A 30-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system is an alternative to the normal 18-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo system.
