OVERVIEW
The X7, the brand's opulent three-row SUV, is the best BMW for transporting a wealthy family. While the BMW's rearmost seats and cargo area aren't as roomy as those of competitors like the Jeep Grand Wagoneer and Mercedes-Benz GLS-class, it still has better driving dynamics and an outstanding lineup of engines.
They range from a 375-horsepower turbo-six to a 523-horsepower twin-turbo V-8, producing 630 horses in the top-tier, maximum-performance Alpina XB7. All models have adjustable air suspension that promotes a pillow-like ride and all-wheel drive.
The interior of the 2023 X7 is calm, but it's also loaded with high-end materials and cutting-edge technology, such as the enormous curved glass display in the dash. The biggest BMW is among the best thanks to these features, the X7's ability to tow, and a variety of standard active safety measures.
What has Changed for 2023?
A mid-cycle makeover of the 2023 X7 adds a more expressive front end, a new dashboard with a large digital display, and BMW's most recent infotainment system. Additionally, the largest BMW SUV includes new driver-assistance technologies and more standard amenities. For the first time, a pair of 23-inch rims will be available from BMW. The revised powertrains for the X7 are also advantageous.
The turbocharged six-cylinder in the xDrive40i now produces 375 horsepower (an increase of 40) and up to 398 pound-feet of torque (up 67). The 4.4-liter twin-turbo engine and the 48-volt hybrid system in the V-8 model now go by the names M50i and M60i, respectively, and are said to be a more effective combination. The top-of-the-line Alpina XB7 is equipped with a configuration that is even more potent than the M60i's 630 horsepower—an increase of 18 over previously.
2023 X7: Engine and Performance
The base model X7 xDrive40i has a 375-horsepower turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, while the M60i has a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine with 523 horsepower. A particularly modified version of its V-8, with 630 horsepower, is used in the Alpina XB7. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic are paired with all three engines. Every X7 has an air suspension with adaptive dampers, and the available rear-axle steering and active anti-roll bars that lessen body motions can further improve the chassis.
The M60i, which by default has a sportier suspension configuration, comes with both functions as standard. The X7's smallest wheels have a 21-inch diameter, but for the first time, BMW is also providing 23 inches. The sporty-looking M60i variant reached 60 mph at our test track in 3.8 seconds.
Under hard throttle, the V-8 engine also makes a robust burbling noise. The X7's handling is surprisingly nimble for a huge SUV, and the steering is precise and well-weighted. The xDrive40i model is better suited for those who desire a more opulent experience because it is both smooth and powerful. We haven't yet put it through our instrumented testing, but we have spent some time driving it.
2023 X7: Interior and Comfort
The dashboard of the X7 is dominated by a huge, somewhat curved digital display. The panel features a 14.9-inch touchscreen that controls the entertainment system in addition to a 12.3-inch gauge cluster for the driver. The cabin is also stocked with a tonne of luxury options, such as heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a power-adjustable steering wheel, and ambient interior lighting.
However, we found it frustrating how slowly the second-row captain's chair moved when attempting to let passengers enter and exit the third row. The X7's handling is surprisingly nimble for a huge SUV Similarly, during lengthy rides, the way-back seats aren't particularly large for people. Nevertheless, nobody will bemoan the X7's generous interior cubby storage. Even though we could only cram three carry-on bags behind the third row, we were still able to fit 33 when all the back seats were folded down.
2023 X7: Connectivity
The 14.9-inch touchscreen that is integrated into the curved glass panel above the dash is the primary interface for the X7's infotainment system, which uses the most recent iDrive 8 software. In addition, the system can be controlled using a sizable rotary knob on the center console and less practical gesture controls. Every X7 comes equipped with a Wi-Fi hotspot (subscription required) and BMW's Digital Key, which enables customers to operate vehicle features remotely using a smartphone app. Optional features include wireless charging and a more potent Harman/Kardon audio.
2023 X7: Pricing
Starting at $77,850, the 2023 BMW X7 xDrive40i is one of the more affordable luxury large SUV models. The high-performance Alpina XB7 retails for $145,000, while the MSRP for the X7 M60i is $103,100.
Which one to Purchase?
Even while we love the twin-turbo V-8's power and impressive performance, we'd still suggest the X7 xDrive40i. Four-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable front seats with memory settings, heated front seats, a power tailgate, and other desirable standard amenities are among its appealing features. We'd also add the Premium package, which comes with a head-up display, gesture controls, and soft-close doors, as well as one of the Vernasca leather upholstery options.
